A lot of attention has been paid toward mobile trends over the last few years, and for good reason. The amount of people who own a smartphone, and therefore are capable of accessing the web, is growing rapidly. According to data released today by the Pew Research Center, 68% of adults in the U.S. now own a smartphone, keeping the steep trajectory we've seen over the last 5 years.
An interesting compliment to this trend is the decrease in laptop and desktop ownership over the last few years. Perhaps the slight dip here, is related to the rapid increase in tablet owners. Currently 45% of adults in the U.S. own a tablet and while not as high as the percentage of people who own a smartphone, tablet owners have been increasing at the same rate since 2010.
These statistics paint a clear picture of the road ahead and strongly reinforce the importance of mobile-friendly design.
